“CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE”

Romans 8:3–4,

For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, He condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

  • ✴The word “condemned” in this verse means ‘to give judgment against, ’as in ‘to judge worthy of punishment.’ So what the Law could not do, because our flesh was too weak to keep the commandments of the Law, God did by sending Jesus to fulfill the Law by keeping its commandments, only to become a curse under the Law.

Galatians 3:11–14,

11 Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, “THE RIGHTEOUS MAN SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.”

12 However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, “HE WHO PRACTICES THEM SHALL LIVE BY THEM.”

13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us — for it is written, “CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE” —

14 in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

  • So judgment for all who failed to keep the Law fell upon Jesus. He became a curse for us so that we might not be cursed throughout eternity, but have a choice of eternal life if we believe in Him, deny ourselves, and follow and obey Him.

Hebrews 5:9,

And having been made perfect, He [Jesus] became to all who obey Him the source of eternal salvation…

  • This is accomplished through walking by the Spirit while putting to death the deeds of the body.

Romans 8:12–17,

12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh —

13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”

16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him.
